Xpress Solver is the technology component that supports all FICO's optimization solver technologies, including:

  • Xpress Optimizer: core engine comprises of LP (simplex and barrier), MIP, (MI)QP, (MI)QCQP, and (MI)SOCP solvers. It also provides core services, like the tuner, to other components.
  • Xpress Nonlinear: provides a successive linear programming and an interior point solver for nonlinear problems, integrating closely with the Optimizer’s MIP framework.
  • Xpress Kalis: provides constraint based programming capabilities. Combined with the optimizer can make use of MIP relaxations of the CP problem.

 

The Xpress Solver v8.5 release provides the following enhancements over the Xpress Solver v8.4 release:

  • Solver performance enhancements
    • FICO improved performance on the respective MIPLIB 2010 benchmarks by 15%-27%
    • FICO improved performance on the respective benchmarks for Simplex LP, Barrier, Concurrent LP, Large LP/QP & SOCP by 7%-26%
    • FICO improved performance on the respective benchmarks for QPLIB by 11-37%

Other enhancements include:

  • Xpress Optimizer
    • Symmetries may now be re-detected locally during a MIP tree search when it is detected to be beneficial.
    • Improved branching for highly symmetric MIP problems.
    • Improved zero-half cuts, in particular for binary quadratic problems.
    • New multi-commodity network flow cuts.
    • Improved dual simplex perturbation scheme for highly dual degenerate MIPs.
    • Improved performance of crossover through better exploitation of vectorization and CPU caching.
    • New API functions  for retrieving the solution value or basis status for an individual variable or constraint.
  •   Xpress Nonlinear
    • Improved rounding heuristics for mixed integer nonlinear problems.
    • Improved SLP-MIP-SLP heuristics in case some rows are enforced in the first SLP iteration.

Installing FICO ® Xpress Optimization for use with the Community License

  1. Obtain the Xpress software installer - the file xpX.Y _win_x86_64_setup.exe, where X and Y are version numbers - from the download page   FICO® Xpress Community License
  2. Before installing the new version, please make sure you uninstall any old version of FICO Xpress Optimization (e.g. a previous Student or Community License Version) and delete the old installation folder (e.g. C:\xpressmp). Otherwise, there may be a conflict
  3. Run the Setup file to install the new version.

Xpress Workbench is the technology component which provides an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that allows Operation Research professionals, Data Scientists and Solution Developers to rapidly and collaboratively develop optimization models,services, and Xpress Insight apps.

  • FICO Xpress Workbench v2.2 is now generally available for customer managed Cloud and On-Premises deployments. It will become generally available on FICO Analytic Cloud in the next month or so.

- Toolbar now includes a compile button and Xpress Mosel compiler options can now be specified.

- Improved support for Mosel DSO data types in the debugger.

- Added a context menu item in the editor to find all usages of the selected model symbol.

- After running or compiling a model, the output pane is now automatically shown, if it was hidden.

- Workbench now looks in the MOSEL_DSO environment variable when searching for Mosel package dependencies.

- Workbench now shows packages in the run configs dropdown, and no longer automatically selects the open file in the dropdown.

It includes support for:

  • Interface Development Language (VDL)

  • FICO Xpress Insight v4.11 is now generally available for customer managed Cloud and On-Premises deployments. It will become generally available on FICO Analytic Cloud in the next month or so.

 

The FICO Xpress Insight v4.11 release brings new capabilities to optimization solution developers and users including:

  • Decision Tree editor
    • Integration of FICO's decision tree module to enable the functionality in Xpress Insight Solutions. This new module includes target driven tree building capabilities using a CaRT algorithm, as well as a number of user interface, and tree profiling & analysis enhancements.
    • Can now create, update and save decision trees in FJDT (FICO JSON Decision Tree) format
    • Custom colors can now be assigned to treatments
  • Support for Tableau 10.5
    • Support for Tableau 10.5 has been added. Note: This release of Tableau includes the 'Viz in Tooltip'. When using this feature please be aware that you will need to apply the scenario id filter to the tooltip view using the 'Apply to worksheets' right mouse click menu option.
  • JS API and VDL
    • VDL 4.1: Updated attachment upload functionality and styling to match latest FICO standard
    • JS API 4.1: scenario.createAttachment and project.createAttachment now support the ability to pass the extension of the attachment to be created.
  • Mosel (mminsight) interface
    • New parameter: insight_is_scenario. This parameter indicates whether the model is running as the master model of an Insight scenario. See the Xpress Insight Mosel Reference for more information.

FICO® Decision Optimizer enables business analysts to discover optimized decision strategies that balance trade-offs between cost, risk and reward, while also factoring in economic and market conditions.

  • It is a FICO Xpress Solution built using FICO Xpress Insight. It is an example of a Framework Solution that is fully configurable through its user interface - the underlying optimization model is fixed.
  • Its advanced decision impact modeling, simulation and optimization techniques allows you to discover better decision strategies that balance trade-offs between cost, risk and reward, while also factoring in economic and market conditions.
  • FICO Decision Optimizer v7.4 is now generally available for customer managed Cloud and On-Premises deployments. It will become generally available on FICO Analytic Cloud in the next month or so.

 

The Decision Optimizer v7.4 release brings new functionality including:

  •   Integrated Decision Tree Development Capabilities
    • Users can now develop data-driven decision trees within Decision Optimizer (DO). There is no longer a need to use separate decision tree development software alongside DO.
    • The primary use case is for the development of decision trees based on optimization scenario results. The treatment allocated by the optimization scenario is set as the tree development target, and a CaRT (Classification and Regression Tree) algorithm is used to build out a tree segmentation that best fits the target.This process allows business analysts to refine the optimization output into a consistent & explainable decision tree strategy that can easily be deployed in FICO applications.
    • There is also an option to color code the different targets, to quickly visualize the purity of each end node in relation to the target, and help the user focus on nodes needing more analysis.
    • It can also be used to support a range of requirements within DO such as: developing challenger decision tree strategies for use as inputs into Simulation Scenarios, creating new tree Decision Impact Model components, supporting segmentation analysis, assessing the criteria used to define current decisions, and editing or refining trees created by tree aware optimization.

  • Stress Testing Scenarios
    • Stress Testing Scenarios allows users to understand the impact of changes in assumptions on calculations and output metrics. For example, what if the bad rate is 5% higher than expected? This helps identify more robust decision strategies that will perform well in a range of competitive, economic or market conditions.
    • Both optimization and simulation scenarios now support Stress Testing scenario exploration.
    • A range of possible stressor values can be applied, as actual, additive or multiplicative values, with a sub-scenario created for each. This allows users to easily understand how changes in assumptions impact results.
  • This release also includes a range of other usability enhancements focused on Treatment management, Validation Scenarios, Segmentation and Reporting

Xpress Executor is the technology component that provides standalone support for optimization execution services. This executes Xpress-Mosel models using the Xpress optimization engines. In addition to Xpress Mosel models, Xpress Executor can solve problems in the industry-standard MPS/LP formats. It provides SOAP and REST interfaces to be either used within FICO Decision Management Platform or from external applications. Data connector extensions of Mosel make orchestration with FICO Application Studio an easy task.

 

The Xpress Executor v2.2.1 release brings the following enhancements:

  • This release includes several new scalability enhancements to Xpress Executor that enable simulations and real-time field calculations to run more efficiently.
  • Enhancements have also been made to ensure optimization jobs complete and overcome any unexpected issues e.g. jobs are re-queued when they disconnect unexpectedly, solver safe mode is enabled for jobs when Xpress Mosel terminates unexpectedly. There is also now the ability to override parameters in the app and easily access logging information
  • The FICO Xpress Optimization documentation is now available online. This helps Xpress customers find what they need more quickly and easily

The FICO Xpress Optimization Community License has now been updated to the latest release v8.4.4

Now, there is a simple mechanism to connect every solver in the market to Xpress Mosel via the open source AMPL connector. The Decision Optimizer v7.3 release brings new functionality to Business Analyst users including:

  • New standard reports
    • Penetration Table report - uses heat chart color coding to help the user identify segments where actions are more or less targeted in each scenario run.
    • Configuration report - provides the user with an overview of all configurations used in the selected scenarios, helping to confirm that the scenario results are a like-for-like comparison.
    • Action averages report - This DO6 report content has been added to the DO7 Outcome Report which now includes a metric for the average value of each action included in the scenario.
  • Enhancements to reporting and segmentation
    • Segments based on actions and treatments - Users can now use action values and treatment ID to support various segmentation schemes for use in reporting.
    • Population grouping within reports - Users can now use Tableau functionality to group actions or treatments in the tables in the Swap Set reports and the values will be correct.
  • Enhancements to scenarios
    • Selection of treatments at the scenario level - This new view allows the user to select which treatments should be included in each scenario, to assess the impact of different selections.
    • Range constraints on exploratory optimization scenarios - This new option allows users to optimize across a range of possible constraint limits.
  • User experience enhancements - this release implements some improvements in tables and table editing.

Please Note: Changes in Support

    • This release omits the Analyst Client application, which is no longer included in the product. Patches for critical defects will be made available for the Insight 4.8 version until end July 2019. Existing users of the Analyst Client should contact support@fico.com to discuss migration options.
    • This version of Xpress Insight no longer supports Tableau 9.2 or below.

  • XPRD - Java: an issue has been fixed in the handling of connection string parameters
  • mmquad 1.2.9 - objective modification now always reported to optimiser
  • mmssl 1.4.1 - an issue has been fixed in the 'hex' driver when used for reading
  • mmxml 2.2.3 - JSON reader: possible failure when loading a file containing only an empty string
  • mmxprs 2.14.0 - using mmquad no longer prevents optimising linear objectives

  • Significant performance enhancements - with the algorithmic enhancements introduced, FICO runs 35% faster in linear programming benchmarks and up to 25% faster in mixed integer programming benchmarks than before. With this release, FICO has regained its leadership position in continuous benchmarks. This represents a significant improvement in in mixed integer programming benchmarks.
  • More specifically, enhancements include:

 

Xpress Optimizer 8.4

  • It is now possible to exploit symmetries in LP problems, using a procedure called LP Folding. This can significantly reduce the size of the problem to be solved and thereby speed up the solution process.
    • LP Folding is automatically applied and can be used with any LP solving algorithm.
    • A new control, LPFOLDING, has been introduced to specify whether LP Folding should be applied.
    • When LP Folding is applied, a solve will now go through three phases: 1) solve the reduced LP using the selected algorithm, 2) a crossover phase and 3) a final cleanup. The exception is when barrier is applied without crossover.
  • For tiny MIP instances with integer or binary variables with a wide range of coefficient, it is now possible to apply a basis reduction algorithm as part of presolve, which will reformulate the integer columns using a reduced basis that is closer to ortho-normal.
    • A new control, PREBASISRED, has been introduced to specify whether MIP basis reduction should be applied.
  • More uses for the Barrier algorithm has been introduced as part of a MIP solution process. It can now be used for tightening or reducing the problems.
    •   A new control, PREANALYTICCENTER, has been introduce to specify when to use a Barrier solution.
  • Several refinements to the branch-and-bound code to improve MIP performance.
  • Writing to the file created by XPRSsetlogfile is now flushed after each line.
  • A new control, HEURFORCESPECIALOBJ, has been introduce to force alternative objective local search heuristics to run on a MIP, even when the automatic strategy has determined they should not be run.
  • More choices for TUNERTARGET when tuning a MIP.
  • New function, XPRSfeaturequery, to query which features are allowed by the current license.
  • Quadratic constraints in binary variables can now be linearized when this appears beneficial.
  • All Xpress-Nonlinear functionality is now included in the XPRS library file. It is no longer necessary to link against the XSLP library.

 

Xpress Nonlinear 8.4

  • Significantly improved performance on numerically challenging problems.
  • Added support for the min/max functions both in Mosel and through API.
  • Added support for the erf (standard error function) and its complement erfc to the API and Mosel.
  • Work with best solutions: XSLP_FILTER bit 1 is now default. Checks now include the initial solution.
  • New attribute XSLP_SOLSTATUS to indicate if a solution is available. This attribute complements XSLP_NLPSTATUS.
  • New attribute XSLP_VALIDATIONSTATUS to check if the current solution is deemed feasible, set up by XSLPvalidate.
  • New attribute XSLP_TOTALEVALUATIONERRORS to indicate the number of evaluation errors that occurred during a solve.
  • New API function XSLPnlpoptimize to solve the problem using the existing optimization sense.
  • New option for XSLP_HEURSTRATEGY to include all heuristics with no effort limits imposed.
  • Mosel can now read and write solutions of nonlinear problems using 'writesol' and 'readsol'.

  • All Xpress Nonlinear functionality is now included in the XPRS library file. It is no longer necessary to link against the XSLP library.

Xpress Executor is the technology component that provides standalone support for optimization execution services. This executes Xpress-Mosel models using the Xpress optimization engines. In addition to Xpress Mosel models, Xpress Executor can solve problems in the industry-standard MPS/LP formats. It provides SOAP and REST interfaces to be either used within FICO Decision Management Platform or from external applications. Data connector extensions of Mosel make orchestration with FICO Application Studio an easy task.

 

The Xpress Executor v2.1 release brings the following enhancements:

  • Xpress Executor now includes Rules execution for the fast and repeated execution of rules within an optimization model run. This feature is for customers who need to run a very high number of rules with a very low latency while running an optimization model in the cloud.
  • This is critical for deploying FICO Xpress Solutions such as Alternative Deal Structure Optimization in the cloud, and embedded in an FICO Decision Management Application, such as FICO Originations Manager.

FICO® Decision Optimizer is a FICO Xpress Solution.

  • It is an example of a Framework Solution that is fully configurable through its user interface - the underlying optimization model is fixed.
  • It enables business analysts to develop, assess and improve the decisions that drive customer interactions and business results, focus on Decision Tree based strategies.
  • Its advanced decision impact modeling, simulation and optimization techniques allows you to discover better decision strategies that balance trade-offs between cost, risk and reward, while also factoring in economic and market conditions.
  • FICO Decision Optimizer is available as both On-Premises and FICO Analytic Cloud deployments

 

The Decision Optimizer v7.2 release brings new functionality to Business Analyst users including:

  • Time Series Equation component support - functionality that allows users to create equations that undertake a series of calculations, such as a Time Series calculation for example, to calculate deprecation of an asset over a number of years or collections action over a number of days. In addition to bringing back this functionality from DO v6.3, the support in 7.2 also adds the ability to identify outputs created during the series calculation as temporary.  This allows users to remove data created during the different series steps, which helps to reduce clutter and improve performance
  • Tree Aware Optimization Treatment Constraints - this fully replicates the v6.3 functionality, but also provides a simpler, more visual user interface for setting criteria. Tree aware optimization allows users to define both eligibility criteria and consistency criteria. Eligibility criteria allows users to define which end nodes of a tree qualify for which treatments. Consistency criteria allows users to define which treatments can be assigned to each end node based on the rank ordering set on a decision tree variable or variables. This functionality will help users get to a final refined Decision Tree Strategy more quickly, potentially saving days during a project.
  • Project and Scenario Package Importation and Export - this new capability will significantly help users export and import whole DO7 projects for sharing, review, etc. A Project Export / Import will now support all the core details of the Decision Impact Model, Scenarios and Results. It will make the moving and upgrading of DO7 projects much more efficient.
